post-april baduppies

After the April's Baduppies ended, Jennifer, the manager at Rye, gave me a glowing remark about Baduppies. She said that it was one of the best animated moments she ever bartended when we the deaf professionals rocked Rye's. Just prior to this Baduppies event, she even had Aaron, another bartender, run to a local store nearby to get two dryboard and dry markers for this occasion. So, she wants me to inform y'all that Rye was very grateful for having you peepos at the bar. She hopes that you'll stop by Rye's whenever you're nearby so she and Aaron can get inspired to do some magical bartending for you!

Now, here are the pictures that you've been waiting for:

Thanks to Karina and Nini for taking the pictures!

See you next month then!

There are many 'ethnic' restaurants scattered throughout this Tenderloin/Nob Hill/Union Square area. So feel free to be an adventurer for once and explore around there for dinner. There are plenty of Pakistian, Indian, Irish, Chinese, Turkish, Japanese, Korean, Italian, Mexican, Thai, Cuban, and of course, cheap eats to relive your old glory from college times. Here is a few suggestions of eats nearby:

Lahore Karahi (Indian/Pakistani)
612 O'Farrell Street
(between Ada Ct & Harlem Aly)
San Francisco, CA 94109

Adana Kebab (Middle Eastern)

We suggest you to arrive at Rye's at 5:30 pm sharply to take advantage of its open comfortable seats (they even have a nice U-shaped booth for a party of 8 people...which is a deaf-friendly table for sure as well as a nice vintage pool table) Time to dust off your blazer and your shiny pointy high heels!

Hope to see you there and of course, feel free to bring your buddies along as well as spread the word around, too!

Totally unrelated to this event (or is it?)

From the wire of Reuters:

WASHINGTON -- A fruity cocktail may not only be fun to drink but may count as health food, U.S. and Thai researchers say.

Adding ethanol -- the type of alcohol found in rum, vodka, tequila and other spirits -- boosted the antioxidant nutrients in strawberries and blackberries, the researchers found.

Any colored fruit might be made even more healthful with the addition of a splash of alcohol, they report in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture.

Dr. Korakot Chanjirakul and colleagues at Kasetsart University in Thailand and scientists at the U.S. Department of Agriculture stumbled upon their finding unexpectedly.

They were exploring ways to help keep strawberries fresh during storage. Treating the berries with alcohol increased in antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activity, they found.

Any colored fruit or vegetable is rich in antioxidants, which are chemicals that can cancel out the cell-damaging effects of compounds called free radicals.

Berries, for instance, contain compounds known as polyphenols and anthocyanins. People who eat more of these fruits and vegetables have a documented lower risk of cancer, heart disease and some neurological diseases.

The study did not address whether adding a little cocktail umbrella enhanced the effects.

Now, guess right now is a good time to order fruity cocktails at Rye as they do have many fresh fruity ingredients to start with!

Lah lah lah... pictures!

The first BADUPPIES gathering came out with a big bang. We did not expect the gathering to be a big turnout! So thank you for making this gathering a successful one! The MOST important thing is that everyone enjoyed it. There was some wonderful new and old connections between friends! (We notice that there were many pagers' email addresses exchanged there!)

Here are the slide show taken from the gathering:

BADUPPIES' inaugural gathering

Now, the next BADUPPIES gathering will be held in Berkeley. We had a few suggestions thrown to us by the Berkelians who came to the gathering. We'll take a glance at those bars first and let you know shortly. If you want to be informed about the next BADUPPIES event, please go to:

http://groups.google.com/group/baduppies

to add your e-address to the list (usually your pager email address). We will send announcement once a month about its location, time, and date, usually one week before the last Friday of the month!

See ya next time then!

our first BADUPPIES posting!

Hi there ~~~

Just want to welcome you to BADUPPIES ' blogsite. Hopefully, this will give you a general idea of what to expect in Bay Area's Deaf Professional Happy Hour event (aka BADUPPIES) .

The organizer(s) will find a bar (usually in San Francisco or Berkeley/Oakland) for all of us the deaf/HoH professionals to mingle around on the last FRIDAY of the month starting FEBRUARY 23rd, 2007. This will be an experimental project to see how this event turns out as the time goes by in a few months.

Next BADuppies gathering date: February 23, 2007
Name: TBA
Location: San Francisco
Time: 6pm to ???

This is the rules of what a hipster bar has to meet 'deaf' requirements:

1) Big space
2) Great lighting
3) Friendly Bar staff
4) No cover/minimal cover (less than $10)
5) and of course, most IMPORTANTLY, close to public transportation stops (especially BART)

This is a great way to kick back, socialize, and mingle after work for deaf/HoH professionals.

If you have any questions about the baduppies event, feel free to email us!

update: oops.. we forgot to add the e-mail address here: baduppies [at] gmail.com
